Grid Connected Solar Power Plants
Solar PV panels are a very cost effective and easy way to power our energy needs today. A photovoltaic (PV) module is a packaged assembly of solar cells along with a charge controller and output socket. These panels can form part of a large MW scale power plant and also be used to power personal and home appliances. Sizes range from 1W to 250W per panel.
In a solar rooftop system, the solar panels are installed on the roof of any residential, commercial, institutional or industrial building. This can be of two types:
(i) Solar Rooftop System with storage facility using battery (OFFGRID)
(ii) Grid Connected Solar Rooftop System (ONGRID)
In grid connected rooftop or small SPV system (ONGRID), the DC power generated from SPV panel is converted to AC power using an inverter and is fed to the grid either via 33 kV/11kV three phase lines or via 440/220 Volt three/single phase line depending on the capacity of the system installed at institution/commercial establishment or residential complex and the regulatory framework specified for respective States.
These systems generate power during the day time which is utilized fully by powering captive loads and feed excess power to the grid as long as grid is available. In case, where solar power is not sufficient due to cloud cover etc., the captive loads are served by drawing power from the grid.
